2. 重复或进一步解释的内容可以略读

文章作者为了把某个问题讲解透彻,往往采用多种表达方式来重复自己的观点,或者给自己的论点加上了许多引申的内容。这里的.“多种表达方式”可能是使用冒号或that is, namely来进一步阐释。基于考试的角度,我们完全没有必要去欣赏文章作者的文采飞扬,不同表达手法的构思精妙,而是只读观点,理解含义。如果一句话和上文是同样一个意思,或是对上文的引申叙述,考生应大胆略读。

例3 If that were an examination topic, most students would tear it apart, offering a long list of complaints: from local smog(烟雾)to global climate change, from the felling(砍伐)of forests to the extinction of species. (20xx.1 CET6 Passage Two)

译文:如果这是一道考试题,大多数学生会将它驳斥得体无完肤,然后列举出一大堆不满:从局部的烟雾到全球气候变化,从森林砍伐到物种灭绝。

例4 Indeed, if people lived, consumed and produced things in the same way as they did in 1900 (or 1950, or indeed 1980), the world by now would be a pretty disgusting place: smelly, dirty, toxic and dangerous. (20xx.1 CET6 Passage Two)

译文:的确,如果人们是按照1900年(或50年代,甚至80年代)的方式生活、消费和进行生产的话,现在世界会是一个非常令人作呕的地方:又脏又臭,充满了有毒物和危险。

例5 There were various views about what constitutes it, but there was agreement that such an essence exists —— that is to say, that there is something by virtue of which man is man. (20xx.12 CET6 Passage Three)

译文:关于人性的构成,人们说法不一,但有一点大家意见是一致的,即人的本质确实存在。也就是说,人之所以成为人是因为有了它。
